Bristol's Badass Burlesque Show
Firstly, go buy this book. All of you. It’s less than £10 on Amazon right now and you will not find a more relevent, comprehensive resource for a burlesque performer today.
Jo ‘Boobs’ Weldon has been at the top of my ‘Oh my lawd, totally badass women’ list for quite some time. She, like a number of other burlesque dancers including Dita von Teese, Catherine D’lish and Kalani Kokonuts, started out in the mainstream stripping circuit. She has been performing, writing, public speaking and teaching for over a decade and is a wonderful advocate for performers and sex workers alike. So not only has Jo done her research but she has lived and breathed the subject matter.
This book is not just for beginners either, it provides a wonderful resource for those at any level. It is easy to become complacent when putting acts together after a while, and we have all been guilty of assuming that we know what we’re doing every step of the way. I found chapters of this book have helped me stay grounded and not assume that my new act is going to be a Field of Dreams – If you make it, they will come – situation.
But, for the beginner there are step by step illustrated instructions for tassel twirling, basic moves, glove removal, boa work and fan dancing. There are tips and tricks from a wealth of (mostly American) burlesque stars and THE HOLY GRAIL: Pastie templates. The book is worth the money even just for those. Some of you out there will be the type of person who can look at a shape and instantly make it conical however I’m guessing that as we are strippers and not mathamagicians the majority of us would struggle. I mean how in the damn hell do you make lips shaped pasties? Oh, wait a sec. Jo knows.
Jo has also included resources, a bibliography and videography thus taking this book out of the realm of a simple handbook and into that of academic texts. But with more tits.
