Bristol's Badass Burlesque Show
Sapphira and her Showgirls have their glittery sights set on the UK. Then the World! She breaks down her big plans below.
Why you are touring the the UK?
I have duel citizenship with the UK and Australia. Both countries are my home. I lived in London for 6 years and discovered burlesque there. This year I am returning to come full circle with my beautiful showgirls, each of them has come through my dance academy where I teach transformation and we have formed a professional group, Sapphira & Sapphira’s Showgirls. The group is now comprised of 5 of us, Laydee Bombay, Kitty D’Vine, Viola Heartbreak and Ms Hunny Pottz. It will be an honour to return to the two cities I consider my ‘spiritual’ homes as London is where I found burlesque and Bristol is where I found my music producers.
What is the plan with your music?
I have been writing with top Bristolian music producers for 3 years combing my voice and lyrics with the sounds of electro, DnB, dubstep and breakbeat. The producers include Kristian Townsend, Darren Beale and Gary Eccles from the breakbeat outfit Ways & Means, Tonestepa and Doc Moody. The plan is that on Friday the 31st of May, I will be taking over Bristol’s premier club, Motion, to debut all the songs we have done together. I want to hear them in a club, on a heaving dancefloor played through a big sound system myself before releasing them to the world. I want to bring together my two loves, the night will be called Bass & Tease and will also showcase a range of amazing performance artists along with headlining DJs including Meat Kate, Cut La Roc, Janette Slack, Lee Martin plus my producers Doc Moody, Tonestepa and burlesque artists, Alexandra Hoftgartner, Tabitha Tease, Gemma Sheree, Pearl Boheme and of course, my showgirls and I!
And you will teaching your famous workshops?
That’s right. Burlesque really transformed my life. I found putting on a costume, giving myself a new name and standing on a stage flicked a switch inside me. I was able to release myself from my old ‘me’ and found this really powerful. I have been teaching this to women around the world for over 8 years and I will be teaching burlesque workshops in Bristol, too.
The workshops are titled ‘STEAL THE SHOW’ and it will encompass fun routines, working on characterisation and give students something that they can take into their day to day lives, not just strutting it up on stage.
Tell us about Richard Branson and your fundraising?
Well, we needed to flights to get to the UK and I have always been a fan of Richard Branson and the Virgin brand. They really support burlesque and have painted Dita Von Teese on a plane as a mascot as well has ran a Burlesque World Record Attempt with 200 Virgin Staff and burlesque artists in Trafalgar Square.
I have declared my love for Richard Branson on Valentine’s Day singing a version of my own song ‘My Heart Belongs To Branson‘. I am asking he donate 5 flights to get us to London.
In addition, we have been fundraising with the famous artist, Charles Billich, sketching me at my own auction in person. His work has been featured in the Vactican Museum, The White House and the palaces of Kings all over the world, it was an honour to have him at my show and we are auctioning the 3 works he donated.
Lastly, people can get behind us by donating on our Pozible page and they will be handsomely rewarded as we have many prizes up for grabs.
