Bristol's Badass Burlesque Show
Bluestocking Lounge will be going pink in 2013 with their very first charity calendar in support of Breast Cancer Care and Break Through Breast Cancer.
The calendar features performers, which include international artists FooFoo LaBelle, Tuesday Laveau and Velma Von Bon Bon and members of the Coochie Crunch collective, all of whom have hit the Bluestocking stage over its three year history and all were in full support of the message behind the calendar and its strong links to the mostly-female Bluestocking Lounge audience.
Burlesque and breast cancer awareness are a great pairing (a-hem!) and as some of you who have been following our shows know, we have tried to run a Bluestocking Goes Pink show for as long as we have been going but strange and unexpected events conspired to spoil our plans – (totally unexpected things like a venue going bust just days before the show forcing us to cancel the event as we couldn’t find a suitable venue in such a short time) so we had a re-think and came up with our calendar!
Breast Cancer is very close to my heart, the Bluestocking Goes Pink thing came about after a promise to a friend who was diagnosed with breast cancer (thankfuly she is out the other side now!), and I’m sure it’s also touched the lives of many of our show go-ers and Coochie Crunchers in some way. Which is why I wanted to raise funds for vital research and support that will help save lives.
It goes without saying that we ladies (and men, yes, men can also be diagnosed with breast cancer too!) should regularly check ourselves for any lumps, bumps and discolouration. If you are unsure of how to do this, head over to www.breastcancercare.org.uk and download their mini guide which explains not only what to look for, but what to do if you notice any changes.
So there’s only one big thing left to say and that’s a massive thank you to all the performers who donated their pink-themed images and provided a face for the calendar, all the photographers who gave us permission to use their shots, to Revue Studios who donated studio time for a lot of the images and to those who will be buying it. The calendars are available from www.bluestockinglounge.com, Hobos in Oxford Street and will be for sale at the next Bluestocking Lounge show at Swansea Grand Theatre, 21 December priced £8. But the good news is Bluestocking ticket holders and those with their birthday printed inside can purchase theirs for just £7.
